Work Permit Requirements

You do not need a work permit to look for a job, however, in order to comply with California Labor Laws, all minors under age 18 (including minors employed by parents) must have a work permit before your first day of work.

Important: Students must have a job offer before a work permit can be processed. The employer section of the application must be completed and signed by the employer.

Work Permit - FAQs

Work Permits During the School Year

Contact: Mrs. Estrada, College & Career Counselor

How to Obtain a Work Permit

  1. Apply for a job and secure a job offer. A work permit cannot be issued until you have been offered a position by an employer.
  2. Once you have a job offer, pick up a Work Permit Application from the Counseling or Main Office, or print the form from the documents attached to this page.
  3. Complete the application and obtain all required signatures. The application must be completed by the student, parent/guardian, and employer.
  4. Return the completed application to Mrs. Estrada in the Counseling Office for processing.

If you are unsure whether you meet the eligibility requirements, please contact Mrs. Estrada before accepting employment. Eligibility is based on your most recent posted grades and attendance record (does not include progress grades).

Important Note: Incomplete applications will delay processing. Please ensure all sections are completed and all required signatures are included before submitting your form. Work permits are typically processed within two business days of receiving a complete application, and students may not begin working until they have received their official work permit.

Summer Permit Eligibility

Grades and attendance are not considered when issuing a summer work permit.

However, all work permits issued during the school year or summer expire shortly after the start of the new school year. Students who wish to continue working after the permit expires must apply for a renewal. Eligibility for renewal is based on the student's grades and attendance from the previous semester.
